I regret to inform two canceled festival for this upcoming weekend. One canceled for citing nearly $400,000 in unpaid fees in two years and the other for safety concerns by Hurricane Irene.

In New York: The free Afro-punk Festival featuring such acts like Cee Lo Green, Janelle Monae, & Das Racist had to be canceled a day before festival could start. “The City of New York has rescinded all event permits for Saturday, August 27th and Sunday, August 28th because of the impending Hurricane Irene. The Afro-punk festival has been barred from holding any public assembly in Commodore Barry Park this weekend. Afro-punk staff have been meeting with officials and sponsors to try and avoid cancellation but have had to cancel this weekend’s festival due to safety concerns. ”

And in Los Angeles: The Sunset Junction Street Fair has officially been canceled after the city of Los Angeles’s Board of Public Works denied the nonprofit Sunset Junction Neighborhood Alliance permits to hold the event. The festival, which has been a yearly event in Silverlake since 1980, had artists such as Butthole Surfers, Peaches and Hanson on board to perform, got dismissed by the Board of Public Works on Wednesday to cancel the event.
