Empire of the Sun at The Music Box

Perth based Australian group Empire of the Sun came stateside for a select run of live shows. The Los Angeles result was an unprecedented 4 night sold out run at the Music Box Theatre in Hollywood.

I read the review that Ice Cream Man and photographer Paige Parsons did on Lollapalooza, and it was Paige’s images from the Empire of the Sun set that inspired me to cover the show here in LA.  Empire of the Sun vocalist and frontman Luke Steele took the stage adorned in regalia fit for a king. His console of rock at the front of the stage was his command central for the evening. In addition to the other musicians, four female dancers adorned in crazy masks and headdresses shared the stage and made the performance feel larger than life as they scampered back and forth and struck vogue style poses. It’s safe to say on stage pageantry hasn’t seen non arena action like this since the Jobriath tour of 1973.

The band cruised through their entire album of electronic friendly pop in just under an hour. Crowd favorites “We Are The People” and smash pop single “Walking On A Dream” sent the packed house into a frenzy, with most in attendance singing every word. I hope Empire of the Sun decides to do a proper U.S. tour so more people can check out their live show experience. I’ll be first in line when they come back to Los Angeles!

So cool! I was hoping someone would cover the Music Box shows, I got to see them again Sunday at OSL, and hope they come through for a full tour.

I should have made the walk over to the far stage at OSL to rock a song. Wasn’t too impressed at Lolla but I didn’t hear any of the singles either…. just saw a lot of dancing
