In LA? Go see the show at the Echoplex on Friday, Feb 8

Holy F-ck are Holy Amazing. HA! You thought I was going use another adjective in there right? Nope, that would be entirely too predictable. It would also be incredibly easy for Holy F-ck to fall prey to predictability. I mean let’s face it: an indie band prone to epic jams comprised of 4 white guys from Toronto? Stop me if you’ve heard this one before.

Let us state for the record that Holy F-ck is awesome- and ANYTHING but safe- when it comes to the songs they unleash. Opening for a band with an international fan base such as the Super Furry Animals must be incredibly daunting. The Music Hall was already packed with SFA devotees when these guys hopped onstage and dove headfirst into their set. The utter joy with which they attack their instruments- we’re talking full on glee here- was the perfect antidote for people to abandon their pre-gig bar banter.

Commanding attention without the use of lyrics is no easy feat and this quartet has honed it to a fine tuned art form. There are several elements to their live show- just watching them load-in their different gear is enough to give you a headache- yet once they hop on stage the layers blend seamlessly into a powerful groove. Multi faceted track ‘The Pulse’ captures everything that we love about this band in a whopping 6 minute dose of perfection. 8 bit bleeps are sandwiched between tommy gun drumming and looping abstracted vox. The tempo waxes and wanes just enough to make you beg for more, and the whole thing gets jacked up by the old school scratching emitted by their film splicer. By the time they unleashed their surefire crowd pleaser ‘Lovely Allen’- the melodies which will transport any grouch to their happy place- my mind was blown. Holy F-ck indeed.
