The Magic Numbers at the El Rey with The Little Ones

The Magic Numbers made their triumphant return to Los Angeles with a night at the El Rey Theater, playing a combination of songs of their new album, Those the Brokes, and older material off their self-titled debut.

The Magic Numbers are made up of two sets of brothers and sisters. They play melodic 60s California sounding pop rock reminiscent of another two men, two women group, The Mamas & The Papas. The debut album was sweetly poppy, while their newest album is a little darker and serious.

On stage though, the Numbers are still sweet and upbeat, despite the slightly more somber mood on Brokes. While the newer songs are good, playing live, I still had a greater attachment to the older material and found myself singing along to the older material. Maybe soon the new stuff will grow on me too.

The Numbers on stage still look slightly awkward too, like they can’t believe that they are even playing in front of an adoring crowd. This is part of their charm though and makes them endearing to an audience.
