Lollapalooza Preview – Best of Lolla

Here’s some best of pics from Lollapalooza in Chicago last weekend. We’ve got over 1500 pics on the way and it’s going to take us a while to roll them into a proper full review. Plus, Bessie and I are driving over 2800 miles in the next 9 days to get to Ashland, Oregon for the 4th Annual Ice Cream Social.

I didn’t get to see that many bands but luckily Bessie was parked a hundred yards directly behind the main stage where Daft Punk, Pearl Jam, MUSE, My Morning Jacket and a bunch more bands played so I got to hear almost all the bands I wanted to. We slang over 4000 free treats throughout the weekend and took advantage of any and all dancing opportunities we could find.

The highlight of the weekend came when I was entering the media tent to give away ice cream to the press folk. Right after entering I was swarmed by four girls (no…that’s not the highlight) who reached into the cooler for some goodies. Three of them left and the one who stuck around said that she’d had ice cream from us before. Then, she went on to say that she met her fiance in front of the ice cream truck while at Bonnaroo. She was standing there eating a strawberry shortcake and he walked up and asked her what it was. She offered a bite and the rest is history. How cool is that?

Among the very few bands I got to see the musical highlight was My Morning Jacket with a full string section. As much as I love their long sets, the fact that they had to squeeze in their best tracks into an hour long set, made for a jam packed hits fest that included “Just One Thing”, “One Big Holiday”, and an extended version of “Run Thru”. They capped it all off with a soulful version of “Move On Up” by Curtis Mayfield that was perfect Sunday music.

Ok, I’m off for now. I’ll write a bunch more stuff sometime in the next few days and hopefully we’ll have the full Lollapalooza review posted on Monday. Keep checking back for reviews from Panda Bear, STS9, Rodrigo Y Gabriela, and Virgin Festival!
