Check out Dappled Cities with Figurines at Spaceland on Oct. 16

A magically easy Tuesday at The Echo was my first introduction to Dappled Cities, a 5 piece from Australia. This particular night was pretty mellow at the echo, most likely because it was a “school night.” When first taking the stage the two front men, Dave & Tim, seemed a little worried about the smallish crowd but by the time they played their first couple chords everyone that had been hanging out on the back patio migrated inside to groove along to the tunes. From what I could tell (seeing as this was my first Dappled experience) the vocal duties are shared almost equally by Dave Rennick & Tim Derricourt. Having 2 male lead vocalists who complement each other the way Dave & Tim do is really kind of a new thing for me. It’s nice to see too that in their sharing each of the guys is still given a chance to show off his stuff in different songs. Some songs will have Dave singing in the range of a rock soprano while other songs may have Tim cawing like a mad bird…but all in a good way.

Also adding to my enjoyment was the between song banter that helped to break up the set a little giving the guys time to woo me with their lovely Aussie accents. Who ever knew they called a monitor a “thingy” in Australia…it’s moments like those that add that little dash of special to any performance, right?!?!

The 5 boys, who spent the following night playing with Tokyo Police Club at the Troubadour, kept everyone there movin’ with catchy tracks like “Fire Fire Fire” and the title track from their newest release Grandance. Solid show. Solid new album. Solid evening.

Thanks Dappled Cities and your cute Swedish tight jeans!
