Broken Social Scene and Bloc Party at the Greek

This was my first time at the Greek theater. And I admit I am not a big fan of going into huge arenas with tons and tons of people, but it was not that bad. Even parking and traffic, for the most, part was a breeze.

Mew started things off for the nite. When I finally figured out where my seat was they were already starting their 4th song. I liked what I heard. They surprised me with notably powerful drum beats and extremely catchy humdrums. Not as much Sigur Ros as I was expecting and I enjoyed what I heard.

Soon after Mew, Broken Social Scene took the stage. I was a bit disappointed to see such few numbers for BSS (not all of them were in appearance this night: most notably Leslie Feist and Emily Haines). Nevertheless, they were simply amazing (as usual). Starting their set off with the popular “7/4 Shoreline”, they brought the whole crowd together, singing in unison as the trio of trumpets tooted along. The opening 5 members slowly became 9, then 11, as the music grew into the heavenly harmony that only a band with 2 drummers, 4 guitarsists, and 3 amazing singers, can provide. They played a long set for an opener (which I was extremely thankful for) and they included songs off all of their albums except for Bee-Hives (why couldn’t you play “Backyards” for me?). They reached a crescendo toward the end of their set with the extremely explosive and emotional “KC Accidental”. After that they ended at their highest point with “Superconected”. The amazing echoing voice of Kevin Drew reverberated throughout the night and nearly brought me to my knees.

I was having doubts if Bloc Party could follow up an act like BSS, but they did so with flying colors. They played their hits (“Helicopter”, “Banquet”, etc.) as well as playing a few songs off their soon to be released new album, which they just completed. My friend Gregor, who shot all these great pics, somehow got us into the pit for the second half of the set, and to be honest, I was very impressed by Bloc Party and their dancey guitar work and robotic drum beats.
