A while back, just before Arthur Ball, I received a message from Michele Knapp, who writes for LA Alternative. She mentioned that the news weekly wanted to do a little story on Ice Cream Man. I tried to squeeze in an interview before leaving for South by Southwest but most of my time was devoted to Off the Wookie at that time. Upon returning from SXSW, Michele contacted me again and said they wanted to do a cover story. Hot Damn…let’s all not forget the benefits of procrastination.

I met Michele at the Brewery’s Artwalk in LA a few Sundays ago and we spend a few hours discussing everything that led to what I’m doing now. Actually, I think I just mainly talked a bunch after pounding way too much coffee. The artist colony was a perfect place to relax for a long interview. I dug a lot of the creations around the place and dreamt of how nice it would be someday to get a warehouse/loft space there to house Bessie and the Ice Cream Crew and office.

Last week they lined up a photo shoot with Aaron Farley and we met at Whittier Narrows, a park off the 60 Freeway. Upon parking I noticed a lot of ducks and I love ducks. My first instinct was to get all the ducks around the truck and I could fake like I was giving them ice cream. We needed some bread so Aaron ran across the street to the Gun Club and ordered some burger buns. He snapped some mighty sexy portrait shots (sorry, gotta get it in when I can) then I went to start Bessie up to pull onto the lawn for the duck shot. She wouldn’t start for over 15 minutes and by the time she did and I pulled her onto the grass, I was afraid to turn her off for fear of being stuck somewhere I wasn’t supposed to be. The ducks were cool but the rumbling engine kept them from really enjoying the Froze Toes and Ice Cream Sandwich they could’ve had.

Sure enough, on Friday, LA Alternative hit the news stands with a big ol’ pic of me on the cover and a walloping article with quite a bit of history on the Appalachian Trail. The AT stuff brought back good memories, those were some of the best days of my life. Someday, when things get REALLY slow i’ll go through my Appalachian Trail photo album and scan in some of the best pics for an update. I guess I have to find that album first and it’s probably locked away in my storage unit in Ashland.

Keep your eyes peeled for a copy around LA. Better yet, you can read the whole article right HERE. Thank you very much to Michele, Aaron, and LA Alternative for helping out the cause. The more press we get the easier it is to get sponsors to help fill up the freezers and gas tank.

I’m outta here in less than a week to kick off the Ice Cream Man National Tour. Assuming Bessie makes it, we’ll be kicking things off with Sasquatch Festival before hitting Wakarusa, Bonnaroo, VICE/Intonation, and a whole bunch more. We’ll be in NYC for a couple weeks too in July. Let me know if you’re gonna be around then.

Everyone should check out the Neighborhood Festival this weekend in Long Beach too. I’m still trying to figure out if i’ll be able to round up some cream and make it. I hope so.
