Check out Dengue Fever on Thursday the 23rd at Tangier.

So I picked up my friend over at Barbara’s @ the Brewery after a long day, quite tired and probably in need of some rest, and headed over to Tangier to catch the Dengue Fever show. I showed up a bit too late to catch the opener, but was just in time to see El Ten Eleven setting up for their set. After getting settled in to a cup of water, El Ten Eleven started up. A two-piece with a bit of sample trickery on the foot switch by guitarist Kristian Dunn. Tim Fogarty keep time on the drums and synth as they played through some interesting tunes. All without vocals and all somewhat lounge-y in their El Ten Eleven kind of way.

After a little conversation, up sprang Dengue Fever. Such a refreshing sound that emanates from the stage when they’re at it. The music is exotic yet strangely familiar. Without fail I’m transported to another corner in the city with the turn of a chord or awash in afternoon traffic at the slap of the rim. The song of the ships horn leaving port echo’s at the hand of the saxophone player and the city shines brighter with every song they play. Listening, I at once think of the untold Jarmusch vision and wander in my mind through the landscape so delicately woven by the tunes of Dengue Fever. Absolute poetry. Well worth the trip to Tangier. Thursday nights through March 2nd 2006.

Peace.

I won’t even tell you how sick I was Friday night and Saturday
