Morcheeba at the Showbox

Morcheeba is once again touring with Skye. (Magic right there!) They recently finished an east coast run that meandered over as far as Denver before a short break. On Tuesday night, they began their west coast leg in Seattle. Shimmering, soulful, layered dreamtime ensued…with rabid appreciation from the (nearly?) sold out audience.

The Showbox is an older venue – it features scalloping at the top of pillars, a ball-bearing floor from it’s days as an early Pacific NW dancehall…and room for a deceptively large number of people (over 1000 when sold out). Tonight, it was packed. After an opening set from San Jose quintet The Mumlers, the energy rose while the lights dimmed and a haze permeated the stage. The band came out, stepped right into a groove, and then Skye made her entrance to a very warm reception. They proceeded to shine throughout the night, seamlessly moving from well-loved material on earlier releases to highlights from their latest release “Blood Like Lemonade”.

What I found most striking about the show was the persistent duality of enthusiasm and chill out that the band generated and the crowd embraced. People were dialed in, and seemingly *very* happy to see the best incarnation of Morcheeba once again on the road.

A fantastic show. If you get a chance to catch them on the west coast this month, don’t pass it up. They are polished and will bore right into the pleasure centers of your brain.
